Sires tosses a no-hitter at Berlin's expense
By Lloyd Jones Editor mailto:Lloyd@conwaydailysun.com
CONWAY — A new chapter in the storied sports rivalry between Berlin and Kennett High was written Wednesday afternoon at Coach Bob Burns Field in Redstone and the author was KHS Senior Jeff Sires who pitched a no-hitter, lifting the Eagles to a 3-0 victory. It was the first of his Kennett career and the first on the new Redstone campus.
"He was masterful," Coach Burns said of Sires, a team co-captain. "It was as good a game as I've seen pitched in quite a while. He was almost perfect. (Berlin) only had two base-runners get on the whole game — one by error in the third and another got hit by a pitch in the fourth and we got him by turning a double-play.
"Jeff got stronger as the game went on," he continued. "He pitched from ahead and relied on his defense to make some plays. Aside from the one error we were pretty solid defensively. Josh Drew made a couple of nice plays at third to keep the no-hitter in tact. He made a nice diving play to his right in the third inning, got up and fired the ball to first in time. Then, in the seven, he took a hard-hit one-hopper right off his chest but kept the ball in front of him and rifled it to first. Alex Milford also had a couple of nice plays at shortstop. When you get that kind of defense as a pitcher I think it just gives your confidence a little bit of a boost."
Kennett got all the offense it would need with Sires on the mound in the bottom of the second inning. Dave Ingram drove in a run with a triple and then scored on a wild throw to make it 2-0 in the game that lasted just over an hour.
Ingram added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth frame with a sacrifice fly.
Burns said people were aware of the no-hitter in the top of the seventh inning.
"Jeff went out to the mound and I called everyone together," he said. "I told them not to play anything too safe, make a bid if it looked like something might fall in. I don't say those two words, but I think everyone understood."
Burns also praised the play of catcher Albee Jacobs, who was stellar behind the plate in the win. "He and Jeff were in sync all afternoon," he said.
Sires, who struck out four in the win, fanned the No. 4 hitter from Berlin to end the game.
"It was an enjoyable game to see," Burns said. "I'm real happy for Jeff and for the team. It's a big win over a solid Berlin (4-5) club. It gets us to 5-3 and hopefully we can continue to build on this momentum."
The Eagles are scheduled to be back in action Friday, and at home, when they welcome Oyster River (3-5) to town for a 4:15 p.m. start.
